Graduates

Leaders becoming Builders

There is a phase where a Leader must adjust to a new way of living after graduating from undergraduate school. During this phase is also a time when a Leader will decide by his words and actions if he is ready to commit to becoming a Builder. It is our hope that every Leader will one day be a Graduate and then become a Builder.

What’s required of a Leader becoming a Builder?

Process

Here is a brief summary of becoming a Builder from being a Leader:

  1. Meeting the Qualifications

  2. Agreeing to Responsibilities

  3. Discussing Transition checkboxes with previous Builder

  4. Becoming Impact Ambassador

  5. Getting matched with freshman or sophomore Leader

Qualifications

Here are the qualifications for a Leader to become a Builder:

  1. Graduate with at least Bachelor’s degree

  2. Have been a “proven” Leader within campus ministry (preferably Impact)

  3. Go through the “transition” phase successfully

Responsibilities

When these Leaders become a Builder, they will take on the following responsibilities:

  1. Build a new leader who’s a college freshman or sophomore

  2. Continue to grow with other Builders in MenBuild

  3. Support Impact (with prayers, finances, and time such as volunteering)

  4. Have found and plugged into a church home (locally)

Transition

What is meant by “Transitioning” successfully?

Most young men don’t understand how major the accomplishment of graduating from college is. Sure, there’s getting the degree and perhaps even having gotten a job, but then what’s next? Life throws a lot of significant choices at our young men before they’re ready to make educated choices such as:

  • how to maintain a budget and be good steward,

  • how to pay off debt and become financially free,

  • how to find good housing and, if single, a good male roommate,

  • how to date in the “professional” world if single,

  • how to prepare for marriage if already engaged in serious relationship,

  • how to file taxes under employment,

  • how to find a job or get into graduate school if nothing is waiting for graduate,</p

  • how to improve time-management,

  • how to live a healthy lifestyle with knowledge of nutrition and fitness,

  • how to deal with emotions as a “grown man”,

  • how to handle family and friendly relationships as a graduate,

  • and how to prepare to be a father.

See complete list at end of this document or @ Short List of Topics.

Transition Time

The time this will take is, at a minimum, 1 full year.

Note: Some graduates will need more time to adjust during this fragile, yet significant, period of life which is okay. The goal is to anchor our new Builders before placing them into a role which requires tremendous amount of time and energy to help a brother reach their purpose in life.

College Degree

Why is a college degree necessary?

  1. Because we mentor college men.

    1. Furthermore: We must be an example before we can help others become an example.

  2. Because we excel in achieving the highest degrees possible for the purpose God has called us.

    1. Furthermore: We promote the value of education.

  3. Because we believe this is a “tool” in equipping us to “work” (as God has appointed all men to work).

    1. Furthermore: We promote the careers of our men and know that a college degree adds to one’s skillset (or upgrade’s a man’s credibility).

Proven Leader

What is a “proven” leader?

As defined in the Impact packet provided to the student leaders at the Impact Leadership Institute, a Proven Leader is a student on the Impact Campus “Servant Leadership” Team who is aligned with the Impact mission and vision while sharing his/her faith regularly. In addition, these other actions have also been accomplished by a Proven Leader:

  1. Spiritually F.A.T.

  2. Gone through “The Journey”

    1. Get students involved in Impact socials.

    2. Assist people in small groups to share their faith.

    3. Eat meals or go to an activity with small group members.

    4. Have FUN and do life with one another (i.e. Christ-like).

  3. Checked with Coach on materials used for discipleship such as Impact resources “The Grill”, “Masters Life”, and “II Timothy Study”

Overall, reaching the African descent with the Gospel of Jesus Christ by going to the ones who have not heard and/or provide reassurance to those who are believers.

Impact Ambassador

What is an “Impact Ambassador”?

An Ambassador is an affiliate to the Impact Movement in supporting the ministry. One must meet the criteria of becoming an Impact Ambassador before receiving the title and privileges, like raising funds under the 501(c)(3) status of the Impact Movement (which is beneficial for tax purposes).

Matching Up Builders and Leaders

Why is matching up a Builder with a Leader so important? How do we make this “match” happen? Well, we don’t make the “match” happen. We hope the “match” happens and by this, we mean that we hope the Builder and Leader are able to bind together like brothers with an initial spark of chemistry that becomes a lifelong fire. On top of this initial spark, we pray the Spirit agrees with the match (of the Builder and Leader) and the Spirit will guide the Builder-Leader relationship.

This “brotherly bond” is so important because…

  1. Without a dependable brother, life is tough.

  2. The love of a brother proves to be an encouraging booster to persevere.

  3. A caring brother that provides challenges will sharpen the soul of a man.

  4. With a brother, one never has to fear being alone.
