the Seed
In October 2010, Field Coach Director for Impact Movement, Lorna Johnson, recognized the need for her male student leaders to have men role models and accountability. In light of this, she reached out to a group of young men familiar with Impact and requested they mentor selected male campus leaders.
the Planting
By November 2010, a handful of young men had responded to the call and “MenTalk” was birthed. “MenTalk” began as a monthly group conference call between male campus leaders and the MenTalk mentors. After just a few months, Impact headquarters received such positive feedback from the student leaders and mentors that Lorna requested MenTalk become its own operative-under Impact. As a result, an all male leadership team was formed.
the Growth
In January 2011, the Co-Directors of MenTalk (Gordon Radney and Daniel Gilmer) renamed the program “MenBuild” to more accurately reflect the holistic vision for mentorship and brotherhood. Terms like: Program Director, Builder and Leader were established and defined to give new program participants a clear vision and path for involvement.
In just 2 years, the brotherhood has slowly grown with established Directorship, 6 Builders, 6 Student Leaders and a program graduate that will return as a Builder.
